Employment
People who have Down’s syndrome want to work for the same reasons as anyone else: to earn their own money, learn new skills, meet new people, feel valued, contribute to society and have the chance to be more independent.
Work is important for so many reasons and is a key part of our personal ambitions.
However people who have Down’s syndrome often face barriers and prejudice, lack of opportunities, low expectations, stereotyping and other negative attitudes.
At WorkFit we have a presumption of employment and we believe that anyone who has Down’s syndrome can work if they want to and they have the right level of support in a role that interests them.
The first step is finding out what the person wants to do then finding a job and an employer that can support their ambition to do a job successfully and make a valuable contribution to their workplace.
Diversity strengthens every workplace.
Companies that employ people who have Down’s syndrome often report significant benefits to their organisational health, such as improved staff morale, as well as enhancing their reputation and customer perception. Employing a person who has Down’s syndrome can have a hugely positive impact at all levels.
WorkFit offers an effective, scalable and evidence-based model for actively supporting people with Down’s syndrome into employment opportunities and encouraging them and their families to consider paid work as a realistic and feasible option.
